Keep in mind that a number of Macs are seemingly about to receive a refresh across the board (always good to keep an eye on a handy guide like http://buyersguide.macrumors.com)-- not to mention the cloud of mystery surrounding Leopard.

You don't want to end up playing the waiting game if you really need a Mac now, but if you can hold out at least until the Leopard announcement (which seems likely it will be in late March) it's probably not a bad idea.

Good luck!

Um... The iMac shreds the Mac pro on games. Sometimes as much as 20 FPS. The Mac pro's have an embarrassing video card in them. And, at least on a quad G5, the X1900 (upgrade?) got worse Cinebench marks than my Macbook pro's X1600. I was left scratching my head. What good is an upgraded card with lame drivers? Do not know about the Intel x1900.

I myself use a Powerbook G4 (it's kinda old skool) that's fine for most of the stuff but designing sites and whatnot is pretty crappy. Not to mention if I get the sudden urge to play something, although I'm getting an Xbox 360 to fix that. But anyway, I'd go for the iMac. Sure it's big but it packs more punch than a heavyweight boxer and the monitor's size just puts a big smile on your face.

The iMac is friggin beautiful. If you get it, everyone's gonna go see it and just stare. The monitor is just HUGE, the colors bright, and the design is stylish.

I say get the Mac Pro. Go cheap pn everything but the Xeons, because Apple charges way too much for memory and hard drives. The lone exception is Xserves, since Apple requires those HDD's to be PERFECT, but for the rest, "high quality" is fine. Relive your love for Newegg and enjoy your Mac at the same time. As for backups, if you get your Mac before Leopard comes out, you should check out Super Duper! (not free, but awesome) or Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware, not as awesome IMHO) for your backup needs.

Good to hear that you are making the switch back to Apple. I just made the switch myself and have been blogging my experiences. I expected to be mostly writing about problems and how I overcame them. Instead I've been able to write about all sorts of cool things.

I was kind of in the same boat that you were. I had music/photo's EVERYWHERE. Within a few days after I received my MacBook Pro I had about 90% of it all organized. I'll eventually get the other 10% done. If you end up deciding to use iPhoto make sure that you get Keyword Manager. Its definitely worth the small purchase price. It saved me so much time putting keywords on all my photos.
